Bach: Three Pieces from the Notebooks of Anna Magdalena Bach
Transcribed by David Jolley
Hornist David Jolley's arrangements of three works: "Kleine Stücke" (originally for harpsichord); "Bist du bei mir" (by G. H. Stölzel); and "Schlummert Ein", an aria from the Cantata Ich habe genug. "Good recital 'starters' are always in short supply. I always think it is good to play as much Bach as possible, whatever the occasion; as wonderful as the Bach Cello Suites are, it is a little daunting to program them, so I hope that theses pieces will help fill the need. One could play one or all of them." The accompaniment also works equally well with organ.

Bissill, R: Valse Noire

Valse Noire was written in 2006 for Nigel Black and Vladimir Ashkenazy for inclusion on a CD of music for horn and piano entitled Corno Cantabile.

A brief piano introduction leads to the main melody that hauntingly twists over shifting harmonies. The middle section is freer and no longer in waltz time as the lugubrious horn line is supported by somewhat jazzier, decorated harmonies. The main theme returns, gathering momentum as it hurtles to the finish.

Bordogni, M: Vokalisen arr Friedrich Gabler
"Marco Bordogni (1788-1856) was one of the famous singing teachers of his time. After several years of singing at opera houses in Italy, he was hired in 1819 as leading tenor at the Italian Theatre in Paris. Luigi Cherubini made him a professor at the Paris Conservatoire, and he held that post almost until his death.
Bordogni pulished six books of vocalises. I have used several of his 'Vocalises faciles et progresives' in the present edition for horn and piano, transposing them to keys that lie better for the instrument; the phrasing has also been changed to suit the horn.

This collection is intended both for study purposes and peformance.

Bush, A: Autumn Poem Op. 45
This piece was written in 1954 as a tribute to the famous young concert-pianist, Noel Mewton-Wood. First performance by Dennis Brain (horn) and Alan Bush (piano)

Scott Goddard, the music critic, wrote about it as follows: "Three times the horn, starting alone before the soft accompanying chord is heard, begins to rhapsodise over a melody which each time opens with a rising fifth. Each time the outline of this horn music is taken higher and ends lower; and with each announcement there is an increase in tone. Between these solo passages the pianoforte insinuates spreading contours. Then, as the pace slightly quickens, the main part of the poem is developed in the manner of an elaboration of the music each instrument has displayed in the introductory bars. There is one short moment of climax and then a slow release of tension as the music fades".

Carr, G: Soliloquy
Grade 7

'Soliloquy' is a miniature that has the horn playing a lovely lento melody. This work was written for Laura Sheppard when she was a student at Trinity College of Music, and was an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) exam piece, as well as having been a Trinity College of Music grade 7 exam piece between 1998 and 2006. For studios, schools, colleges, conservatories and professionals.

"Should be in the library of every horn student." The Horn. "Soliloquy is a miniature which has the horn playing a lovely 'Lento' melody alone and with a semplice piano accompaniment. This again would be a very good student piece, although it has a couple of top A's and an optional two-bar top C." The Horn Call November 1995. Carrapatoso, E Sweet Rustica (1996)

Dedicated to António Costa
Potuguese Composers Seies
Sweet Rustica is an informal piece that recreates, through a constant game of words, the old baroque form. It begins with Prelúdico, an allegory to the wonderful prelude in C minor in the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach. While in the Allemande, by which I mean Almôndega do 2° Modo, there is a sonorous universe of total contemplation. In Giga à Mirandesa (adaptation of the famous Mirandum, Mirandum, from Trás-os-Montes) the bells from my village are present. In Aria da Capo Espichel, just like in Cabo Espichel, a convent that crosses the paths lies there in ruins. It is a forlorn scene, with the sea behind the building representing or symbolizing pure escapism. Then follow the old Victian La Folia in Sarabanda e Sóniabanessa and Ensopado de Bourrée, a real concentration of energy. The piece ends with Postlúdico, the devolution of the musical work, with its hypnotic ostinati and with the peacefulness of "all the Alentejos of this world". The music thus melts away in pure sound. Colomer, J.J: Visions

"The main concept behind "Visions" for Horn & Piano is the idea of two separate elements expressing the same idea, in other words, how certain themes are viewed and developed by each of the two instrument. Beginning with a main theme that could be considered as the starting point, both instruments take parallel but somewhat independent paths, using the thematic material in different ways, sometimes crossing and briefly overlapping only to again go their separate ways. The introduction of a secondary theme is treated similarly between the two instruments. Following with that same idea, the piano briefly announces the second movement even before the horn has even started the Cadenza at the end of the first movement. It is in this second movement that the dissociation between the two instruments is most obvious since the main theme played by the horn is a variation of the first movement theme, which is not reflected in the piano, and vice versa. It is only at the end of the movement that the horn and piano once again converge on the piano theme. The main characteristic of the third movement is that even though the two instruments would appear to have an identical vision of the theme, one in which they execute the thematic material in a more similar way, most of the time the principal obstacle for the convergence of the two, in the designed question and answer format, is the subtle shifts in time, which range anywhere from the difference of a few bars to a quasi coinciding sixteenth notes. Cosma, E: Sonatine (ca 1954)

A youthful effort, this Sonatine is evidence of the love of the composer for the horn, his «second» instrument at the Conservatory, and of the influence on him of the rhythms and modes of the folk music of his native Rumania, as well as the discovery of such composers as Ravel and Bartók. But certainly is revealed already a very personal music profile in this charming, and highly expressive work.

D'Rivera, P: Vals Venezolano and Contradanza
for French Horn solo or French Horn and piano
To Anyonio Lauro
D'Rivera is well known as a cross-over artist and composer (6 Grammy awards). These two exciting Latin dance pieces work well with or without the piano accompaniments. Contradanza is a tribute to legendary Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona; the Vals Venezolano honors Venezuela's Antonio Lauro in a lively syncopated waltz. These vibrant pieces are perfect as encores or instrumental feature pieces!

Dukas, P: Villanelle
URTEXT
Editor: Dominik Rahmer
Fingering of Piano Part: Klaus Schilde

"Paul Dukas wrote his Villanelle as a demanding exam piece for the horn class of the Paris Conservatoire in 1906. The title, referencing a cheerful traditional vocal genre that originated in 16th century Italy, already shows that it is by no means a dry etude. Alongside the technical challenges (stopped notes, fast scales, playing without valves using natural horn techniques), the piece is successful because of its refreshing melodies, for which reason the Villanelle is still one of the most popular performance pieces for the horn. For our Urtext edition we consulted the autograph as well as the first edition that was originally for horn and piano: the later version with orchestral accompaniment does not stem from the composer."
